Craftsmanship Standards

The Architectural Woodwork Institute sets standards for appearance, engineering, fabrication, finishing and installation. Builders and architects need to be aware of three AWI grades when specifying work to be done:

  • Premium
  • Custom
  • Economy

Most architectural woodwork is custom grade, with premium grade reserved for special projects or focal points, and economy representing the minimum expectation of quality, workmanship, materials and installation.

Visit the Architectural Woodwork Institute website for the most up-to-date standards.

For a new Spanish Colonial-inspired house in Hillsborough, California, Atelier Lawrence Cheung installed a handsome custom walnut door, which channels traditional Mission style in an elegantly modern way that balances Old World charm with a clean, contemporary aesthetic. The wood has been given a richly weathered finish that contrasts beautifully with the creamy limestone surround, white stucco walls, bluestone tiling, and the wide-plank white-oak flooring inside.
